How do you lower your cholesterol?

Question by Theauthor217: How do you lower your cholesterol?
I’m at an age where I don’t really need to worry about my cholesterol all that much. (I’m 18) But, I’d like to prevent myself from having heart problems when I get older. I see all these advertisements on TV and the internet for drugs that can lower your cholesterol, but I know that you can lower your cholesterol through exercise, and diet. Is there any other everyday activity that I can do to lower my cholesterol?

Mandy, I stick to things that I setup for myself because I have learned over the years that this is possible by making my goals attainable. Unfortunately, people are often too interested in quick results that they spend needless amounts of time on things that will not work in order to get a quick fix when they would have reached their goals had they set them more reasonably and just been more patient. For instance, if you wish to diet then try adjust your food level somewhat and gradually work toward a diet that is more strict. If you just go straight from too much to too strict then you’ll never make it. Also, don’t go to the gym 2 or 3 hours a day from the beginning. Just go work out about 15 minutes and get used to the routine of going. Then, as you gain more stamina you can increase the time as needed. Too many people expect too much in too little time and get discouraged. Just realize that this is a life-time commitment and work slowly so that you can model your life as appropriate.

What can music teach us about the mind and in turn what can brain science reveal about music? Though interest in music and the mind dates as far back as Plato, it’s only the past decade that the field of music neuroscience has really begun in earnest. Not only does music gives us a window into how our brain functions, but it also has therapeutic benefits to our health. To help us understand these connections, our host David Granet, MD, is joined by experts Aniruddh Patel, PhD, with The Neurosciences Institute, and Barbara Reuer, PhD, with Resounding Joy® for this fascinating look at music and the mind.
